Nethengwe Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
History & origin
Nethengwe is recorded in Venda oral tradition as one of the prominent chiefs of the Vhatavhatsindi, alongside Matidze and Manenzhe. The Vhatavhatsindi settled at Lwandali and Thengwe; the surname Nethengwe (Ne- meaning 'ruler/owner of', + Thengwe) reflects the Vhangona naming convention in which a chief takes the name of the place he rules, here the Thengwe area. The Vhatavhatsindi are among the early/aboriginal clans of Venda whose sub-groups include the Vhakwevho and Vhafamadi.
