Netshimbupfe (Ha-Tshimbupfe) Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem Documented totem not reliably established in available sources; the Netshimbupfe are part of the Vhalaudzi of Govhamasenga, who derive from the Vhasenzi/Singo group (elephant-Ndou associated), but I cannot confirm a distinct Netshimbupfe totem from documented tradition.

History & origin

Netshimbupfe is a branch of the Vhalaudzi of Govhamasenga, a lineage that traces to the Vhasenzi group led by the Singo, which settled along the Mutshedzi River in the Nzhelele valley (an area called Vhulaudzi). The branch was founded by Ratshikwekwete, a son of Govhamasenga, who conquered the area of Tshimbupfe (previously held by the Vhakwevho of Mammbana) and named himself Netshimbupfe, 'ruler/owner of Tshimbupfe' (the Ne- prefix means ruler/owner of). The Netshimbupfe are thus closely related to the Ha-Masia line (Masia Mbando) and the Netshivhulana branch (founded by Mukovhi at Tshivhulana), all children of Govhamasenga.
