Netshituni Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Masingo / Vhasenzi origin; specific clan totem (Ndou/elephant of the Singo line) likely but not explicitly recorded in the source consulted
History & origin
The Netshituni are documented as Masingo, part of the Vhasenzi who settled in Venda in the mid-1600s, establishing themselves in the Nzhelele area of what is now the Makhado region. Their founding leader Mapfumo settled in a place abundant in 'mitu' trees; the locality became known as Tshituni ('the place where mitu trees abound'). On becoming ruler, Mapfumo took the title/surname Netshituni, meaning 'ruler/owner of Tshituni' (the 'Ne-' prefix denotes ownership/rulership, common among older Venda lineages). Khosi Netshituni is remembered for accommodating chiefs and communities displaced from the Makhado area and the Luvuvhu River valley; because so much of his land was given over to these resettled communities, his jurisdiction shrank and his status was reduced from khosi (chief) to vhamusanda (headman).
