History & origin
Ngangelizwe (Qeya) kaMtirara (c.1846-1884) was paramount king of the abaThembu, son and Great-House heir of Mtirara. He was the last independent Thembu paramount: during his reign the abaThembu came under increasing colonial pressure, and he eventually placed Thembuland under the protection and then administration of the Cape Colony in the early 1870s-1880s, leading to formal annexation. He died in December 1884 and was succeeded by his son Dalindyebo.
