Ngcwangu Clan — History & Meaning
Xhosa clan · isiXhosa
History & origin
Ngcwangu is documented as the name of an early king in the senior Tshawe royal line of the amaXhosa. In the recorded Xhosa kingship succession, Ngcwangu descends from Tshawe (founder of the senior royal house) and is given as the father of Sikhomo, who fathered Togu, from whom the later kings Ngconde, Tshiwo and Phalo descend. This places Ngcwangu in approximately the late 16th to early/mid 17th century, the period during which the amaXhosa were extending political ascendancy over coastal Cape Khoi groups in the region west of the Kei. Note: the detailed Xhosa king-list is widely reproduced but is only weakly sourced in some references, so dates and exact relationships should be regarded as approximate rather than firmly attested.
