Ngqika Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

Ngqika refers to the amaNgqika, a Xhosa (Rharhabe) chiefdom, and to its founding chief Ngqika (c. 1778-1829). The Xhosa royal line descends from Xhosa through Tshawe (founder of the Tshawe ruling dynasty) to Phalo. Phalo's sons Gcaleka and Rharhabe split the nation; the Rharhabe house settled west of the Kei. Rharhabe and his heir Mlawu both died around 1782, and leadership passed to Mlawu's young son Ngqika, with his uncle Ndlambe serving as regent until Ngqika came of age and took power. The rivalry between Ngqika and Ndlambe shaped Xhosa politics during the Frontier Wars with the Cape Colony.
