Ngwenya Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Ngwenya (the word means 'crocodile' in Nguni languages, the clan's totem animal) is a Nguni clan found among the Swazi, Zulu and Ndebele peoples. Among the Swazi it is counted among the foundational ('emakhandzambili', those found ahead) clans of the Swazi nation, associated historically with the area between the Mkhondvo and Ngwempisi rivers in present-day Eswatini. The clan's wide distribution across Eswatini, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal reflects both its antiquity and the porous historical boundaries among Nguni-speaking communities of the region.

Notable figures & facts

The clan is recognised within the Swazi nation-building tradition as one of the early-settled clans incorporated into the emerging Dlamini-led Swazi kingdom; individual named historical leaders are not reliably documented in available sources and so are not asserted here.
