Its most historically documented clan association is with the Nkosi-Dlamini, the royal house of the Swazi nation (Eswatini). The Dlamini royal line traces to Dlamini I, founder of the Bembo/Embo-Nguni Dlamini lineage, whose descendants settled in the Pongola River region and absorbed neighbouring Nguni and Sotho groups to form the nucleus of the Swazi kingdom. Because 'Nkosi' is also adopted independently as a surname by many unrelated families across South Africa and Eswatini (it being a common honorific), not every Nkosi family descends from the Swazi royal Nkosi-Dlamini line; the firmly documented history pertains specifically to the Nkosi-Dlamini royal house.
