Nkosi Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Nkosi (meaning "king/chief") is a widespread Nguni clan name borne by Zulu, Swazi, Ndebele and other Nguni-speakers. It is not a single clan: several distinct lineages carry the name, the best documented of which links Nkosi to the Mntungwa-Khumalo genealogy (the line of Mkhatshwa, Zikode and ultimately the Khumalo of Mzilikazi) through ancestors such as Siwela and Langa, and to clans like the Ndlangamandla. Other Nkosi houses are associated with the Swazi and with the Ndebele. Because the name spans multiple unrelated houses, individual Nkosi families are distinguished by their own izithakazelo.

Notable figures & facts

Borne across Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele society; several distinct royal/chiefly connotations (the word itself means king/chief). No single founding ancestor applies to all Nkosi families.
