Nxumalo Clan — History & Meaning

Zulu clan · isiZulu

History & origin

Nxumalo is the royal clan name of the Ndwandwe, a major Northern Nguni kingdom that settled between the Pongola and Black Mfolozi rivers in the 18th century. Under King Zwide kaLanga (c. 1758-1820s), son of Langa kaXaba, the Ndwandwe were one of the dominant powers of the region and destroyed the Mthethwa under Dingiswayo around 1817-1818. The Ndwandwe were then defeated by Shaka's Zulu in the Ndwandwe-Zulu war of 1817-1819, including the battle at Gqokli Hill. In the aftermath, Ndwandwe generals and their followers dispersed northward: Soshangane founded the Gaza state in present-day Mozambique, and Zwangendaba led a group that became the Ngoni in present-day Malawi/Tanzania. The clan thus has both a Zululand heartland and a wide regional diaspora.
