Nxumalo Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Nxumalo is the clan name of the Ndwandwe, a powerful Nguni polity that took its name from an early chief and is also known by the surname Nxumalo. The Ndwandwe/Nxumalo, under the chief Zwide (rendered Zidze in siSwati), were major rivals of the early Ngwane/Swazi and pushed them northward during the conflicts preceding and during the Mfecane. Despite this rivalry, the clans intermarried with Swazi royalty: Ngwane III's queen mother came from the Ndwandwe/Nxumalo clan, and Tsandzile Ndwandwe (laZidze, "daughter of Zidze") was the wife of Sobhuza I and mother of Mswati II, becoming an important Swazi queen mother. The Nxumalo are counted among the emafikamuva clans within the Swazi nation and are one of its most populous surnames.
