History & origin
Nyathi (meaning 'buffalo') is a clan/totem name strongly associated with the Northern Ndebele (Matabele) and Shona-speaking peoples of Zimbabwe, where it is among the most common surnames; it is also found in South Africa, Botswana and Malawi. Among the Ndebele it functions as an isibongo within the multi-ethnic kingdom that Mzilikazi kaMashobane (a former commander under Shaka) founded after the Mfecane, when his people moved north from the Natal region and settled in Matabeleland around 1840, absorbing Sotho, Shona and other groups. As a totemic name 'buffalo' connotes strength and resilience.
