Phalo Clan — History & Meaning
Xhosa clan · isiXhosa
History & origin
Phalo (died 1775) was a king of the amaXhosa, son of Tshiwo, ruling in the eighteenth century. His reign is pivotal because the Xhosa royal nation divided into two great houses through his two senior sons: Gcaleka, the heir of the Great House, and Rharhabe, the head of the Right-Hand House. This division produced the amaGcaleka (east of the Kei) and the amaRharhabe (west of the Kei), a split that shaped the political geography of the Xhosa throughout the colonial period.
