Phasha Clan — History & Meaning
Pedi clan · Sepedi
Totem Commonly associated with the kolobe (pig/wild pig) or with the kwena (crocodile) depending on the branch; the Baphasha are most widely cited as a kolobe-venerating Bapedi clan in some traditions, though branch variation exists.
History & origin
The Baphasha are a well-known Northern Sotho (Bapedi) clan concentrated in Sekhukhuneland and surrounding parts of Limpopo. They are one of the numerous lineages that formed part of the Pedi confederacy/morafe system centred on the Marota (Pedi royal house). Baphasha communities are documented as established traditional authorities in the Sekhukhune and Greater Tubatse districts. Because branch-level totem attributions vary in the oral record, the totem should be treated with caution.
