It appears in standard listings of Mpondomise clans alongside Jola, Debeza, Qadi, Mpinga, Mpehle, Mhaga and others. The amaMpondomise trace their descent through Njanya, whose sons in oral tradition were the twins Mpondomise and Mpondo, placing the people within the wider abaMbo Nguni grouping.
