History & origin
The amaQwathi are a small but fiercely independent people of the Eastern Cape, historically settled around Engcobo in the former Thembuland. Tradition records that they were founded by Mtshutshumbe, who split away from the amaXesibe; the line is given as Xesibe to Ntozabantu, Ndzuza, Miyana, Bimbi, Nondzaba, Hlabe, Mthetho and then Mtshutshumbe, who established the amaQwathi nation. They settled at Engcobo around the late 17th century during the reign of the Thembu king Dlomo, and over time became closely tied to the abaThembu in culture and politics while retaining a distinct identity. They are remembered for their staunch resistance to colonial rule. The nation comprises many sub-clans, including amaDikela, amaTshaba, amaNzolo, imiNcayi and others.
