Ramabulana (Ha-Ramabulana) Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Elephant — Ndou (Tshivenda), as the senior Singo royal house.
History & origin
The Ramabulana dynasty descends from Munzhedzi Mpofu, son of Thohoyandou, whose son Rasithu took the title Ramabulana. After the post-Thohoyandou succession wars Munzhedzi relocated the capital to Songozwi (Luatame/Vuvha area, near present-day Makhado town). The house produced King Makhado Tshilwavhusiku Ramabulana, who dominated the late 19th century, resisting Boer expansion from Schoemansdal until his death (poisoning/assassination) in 1895, and his son King Mphephu Ramabulana, who continued resistance to colonial forces. Tshivhase, Masakona, Nthabalala, Khakhu, Rambuda and Davhana are counted among the chiefly lines linked to the Ramabulana/Singo royal family.
