Rambuda (Ha-Rambuda / Dzimauli) Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Elephant — Ndou (Tshivenda), as a Singo-derived royal house (kin of Thohoyandou).
History & origin
Ha-Rambuda was founded by Phophi Rambuda, a younger brother of Thohoyandou and Raluswielo (Tshivhase) of the Singo. After Thohoyandou's disappearance (c.1770) Rambuda first settled at Vhuphani, then as a hunter crossed the Mutale River and reached Dzimauli, then ruled by a female chief, Nyafhasi; he conquered Dzimauli and made it his independent chiefdom rather than remaining under the Tshivhase line. His son Vele Rambuda refused tribute to Ligegise Tshivhase ('he would not pay tribute to a boy'), and repeated Tshivhase attempts to dislodge the Rambudas from Dzimauli's mountainous terrain failed. Vele had 14 sons who defended the chiefdom. King Makhado's son Mphephu later campaigned to reunite Ha-Rambuda under Tshikosi Rambuda. The clan remembers the Mavhoi battalion that captured the fortified royal residence by swinging from tree branches, hence the self-praise 'vha ha Rambuda tshiwangamatembele' (the Rambudas who jumped from the tree branches). The royal capital is Dzimauli; villages include Tshixwadza, Fefe, Luheni, Tshamulumbwi, Tshitopeni and others.
