Shabangu is documented among the emakhandzambili ("those found ahead") clans of the Swazi nation, peoples who were already settled on the land before the Dlamini immigration and conquest and were subsequently incorporated into the kingdom. As with other emakhandzambili, they were absorbed under the expanding Dlamini royal authority during the formation of the Swazi state.
