Shezi Clan — History & Meaning

Zulu clan · isiZulu

History & origin

The Shezi are a Zulu clan historically associated with the Nkandla district of present-day KwaZulu-Natal, an area of dense forest and rugged terrain in which the clan held land. Community-recorded oral history (documented by the Ulwazi Programme, a KwaZulu-Natal heritage initiative) records the Shezi as ironworkers who smelted iron and forged hoes and spears, an economically important craft in the pre-colonial Zulu world, and who worked alongside neighbouring smith lineages in the region. Beyond this localised oral tradition, a fuller documented genealogy of the clan's founding ancestor and chiefly line is not well established in reliable published scholarship.

Notable figures & facts

No widely documented historical figure can be reliably attributed to the clan; the most consistently recorded element is the clan's traditional iron-smelting and weapon-making activity in the Nkandla area.
