Sibandze Clan — History & Meaning

Swati clan · siSwati

History & origin

Sibandze (also rendered Nsibandze, Sibande or Nsibande) is a well-documented Swazi sibongo (clan name) of Nguni origin, counted among the clans incorporated into the Swazi state during its consolidation. The Nsibandze are recorded among the emafikamuva ("those who arrived after") who were absorbed into the kingdom and given positions of authority. The Sibandze people are historically associated with the area around Zombodze in southern Eswatini, to the south of the present-day Mkhonta and Nhlabatsi chiefdoms. The clan supplied important tindvuna (royal governors/headmen); one tradition records that Lohhiya Sibandze was granted the territory occupied by the Nkonyane people, who thereafter fell under Sibandze authority.

Notable figures & facts

The Nsibandze clan held the office of indvuna (royal governor) over a chiefdom in southern Eswatini and produced administrators within the traditional governance structure. The clan name has historically been associated with royal service and territorial authority south-west of present-day Mhlosheni.
