Singo (Vhasingo / Masingo) Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem Elephant — Ndou (Tshivenda). The elephant is the totem of the Singo royal lineage, reflected in the name Thoho-ya-Ndou ('Head of the Elephant').

History & origin

The Singo were a Karanga-Rozvi (Vhasenzi) conquering group who entered the Soutpansberg/Venda region from the Great Zimbabwe-Rozvi sphere, traditionally dated to around the 15th-17th centuries. Led by figures such as Dimbanyika (regarded in tradition as the first king who unified the independent Vhangona clans into one nation, the Vhavenda), they established their capital at Dzata in the Nzhelele valley. The Singo carried the sacred drum Ngoma-lungundu, associated with the deity Mwali/Mwari. Their most famous king, Thohoyandou, greatly expanded the kingdom from the Limpopo (Vhembe) in the north toward the Crocodile river, and vanished around 1770. After his disappearance, succession conflict among his son Munzhedzi Mpofu and brothers Tshisevhe and Raluswielo split the kingdom into the major houses (Ramabulana, Tshivhase, Mphaphuli, Rambuda). All the major Venda royal dynasties — Tshivhase, Mphaphuli, Ramabulana, Mphephu, Rambuda — descend from the Singo.
