Skhomo Clan — History & Meaning
Xhosa clan · isiXhosa
History & origin
Skhomo (Sikhomo) is documented as the name of an early king in the senior Tshawe royal line of the amaXhosa. In the recorded succession of the Xhosa kingship, Sikhomo appears as a son of Ngcwangu and a descendant of Tshawe (the founder of the senior amaXhosa royal house), and as the father of Togu, from whom the later kings Ngconde, Tshiwo and Phalo descend. This places Sikhomo in roughly the 16th-17th century, during the period when the amaXhosa were establishing political ascendancy in the region between the Kei and the southern Cape coast. A separate, distinct figure named Sikhomo also appears in amaMpondomise genealogies (in the line Mpondomise > Ndunu > Sikhomo > Njanya > Malangana), so the name occurs in more than one Nguni royal genealogy. Note: the detailed Xhosa king-list is widely reproduced but is poorly sourced in some references, so individual dates should be treated as approximate.
