Skhosana Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin

Skhosana (also Sikhosana/Skosana) is a Southern Ndebele clan name traced in Ndebele oral tradition to Masombuka, one of the sons of King Musi. In the genealogies recorded for the Ndebele of Musi, Masombuka's house gives rise to the Skhosana clan, making it one of the senior collateral lines alongside the ruling Manala (Mabhena) and Ndzundza (Mahlangu) houses. The Skhosana are concentrated in the historic Ndebele areas of present-day Mpumalanga and Gauteng. As with other Ndebele clans, descent and belonging are carried through izithakazelo (clan addresses). Because oral traditions about Musi's sons vary between recorders, the precise birth order and the number of Musi's sons differ across sources.

Notable figures & facts

The Skhosana are recognised as one of the principal Southern Ndebele clans descending from Musi's house (via Masombuka).
