Thembu Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

The Thembu (abaThembu) are a major Xhosa-speaking Nguni nation of the Eastern Cape, traditionally settled in the region between the Mbashe and Mthatha rivers and northward toward the Drakensberg foothills. Their royal genealogy traces descent through a long line of kings, with the kingdom historically centred on the Great Place and divided between the western (Hala) and other Thembu sections. The Thembu were a powerful and long-established polity prior to and during the colonial encounter.

Notable figures & facts

Nelson Mandela, who belonged to a junior (Madiba) house of the Thembu royal lineage; Ngangelizwe and other Thembu kings of the 19th century; Dalindyebo, the royal house name borne by Thembu kings.
