Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Thwala (rendered Tfwala in siSwati orthography) is one of the bemdzabuko ("true Swazi") clans, the core group of clans that accompanied the Dlamini royal house during the early formation of the Swazi nation. As one of the original founding clans, the Thwala/Tfwala are regarded as part of the oldest stratum of Swazi society. They are also recorded among the clans that rallied to Sobhuza I in the early nineteenth century.
Notable figures & facts
As a bemdzabuko clan, the Tfwala hold long-standing chiefdoms within Eswatini. The Tfwala of Macetjeni are noted in historical records as one of the subordinate chiefdoms involved in long-running disputes with the Swazi royal house over chieftaincy and territory in the Lubombo region.
