History & origin
Tshikalange is recorded as a royal Singo-associated name. In Singo tradition, 'Tshikalange' was a title given to the surviving son of Tshilume when he was crowned king of the Singo in the land of the Vhakalanga (Kalanga). According to the tradition this King Tshikalange died of malaria before crossing back over the Vhembe (Limpopo) River during the southward Singo migration. The surname is counted among the royal surnames of the area north of Thohoyandou, associated with a Tshikalange chieftaincy/'kingdom' sited at Tshififhi.
