Tshisevhe Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Singo royal house; totem Ndou (elephant) of the Masingo ruling line
History & origin
Tshisevhe was a son of the Singo king Vele-la-Mbeu of Dzata and a full brother of Phophi (Thohoyandou) and Raluswielo (Tshivhase). In the succession crisis that followed Thohoyandou, Tshisevhe served as acting king but refused to step down, bringing him into conflict with Thohoyandou's son Munzhedzi Mpofu. Tshisevhe was defeated in the war of succession and was assassinated by Munzhedzi Mpofu. His son Ravhura fled the Dzata heartland after the assassination and went on to conquer Makonde (then under Khosi Muthivhi), founding the Makonde chieftaincy. The Tshisevhe/Ravhura line thus belongs to the senior Singo royal stock and is the ancestral house of the later Makonde (Mavhungu) rulers, who in 2004 entered the Venda kingship dispute as descendants of Vele-la-Mbeu.
