Tshiwo Clan — History & Meaning
Xhosa clan · isiXhosa
History & origin
Tshiwo was a king of the amaXhosa, son of Ngconde and father of Phalo, in the senior House of Tshawe. He reigned in the period before the major eighteenth-century expansion of the Xhosa. Oral tradition associates his reign with internal consolidation of royal authority; when he died his heir Phalo was an infant, and the kingdom was administered by a regent (in tradition, Gwali/Mdange of the right-hand and minor houses are associated with this era) until Phalo came of age. As with other pre-colonial kings, detailed records are limited and he is documented mainly through genealogical tradition.
Notable figures & facts
