Vundle Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

The amaVundle are one of the population fragments absorbed into the abaThembu kingdom of the Eastern Cape. Thembu tradition records that the early king Nxeko (Ngxeko), in building the Thembu kingdom, accommodated and assimilated various groups at Msana, including amaBomvana, amaVundle, amaMpondomise and others. The amaVundle are widely regarded as being of Sotho-related origin who were incorporated among the Xhosa-speaking Thembu; associated clan lines such as Mvulane and Bhayi are recorded as belonging to the amaVundle and carry 'Msuthu' references reflecting that background.
