Yengwa Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
Yengwa is a Zulu clan name from KwaZulu-Natal; its bearers are historically associated with the Maphumulo area of the Natal midlands/north coast. The clan is most reliably documented through one of its members, the anti-apartheid leader Massabalala Bonnie ("M.B.") Yengwa, whose family background is recorded in historical sources: his father was a Zulu labourer who took part in the 1906 Bambatha Rebellion against colonial taxation and was later imprisoned during the ANC's 1919 anti-pass campaign, situating the family within early twentieth-century African resistance in Natal.
