Zondi Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
The amaZondi clan lived in the Mpanza Valley in the Greytown district of colonial Natal (present-day KwaZulu-Natal). The clan is best known through its chief Bhambatha kaMancinza Zondi (born c.1865 in Mpanza), who led the 1906 armed uprising against the Natal poll tax (the Bhambatha/Bambatha Rebellion). After the rebellion the clan fragmented, with portions moving to Zululand, others associating with the abaseNxamalala, and others becoming known as the abakwaMpumuza. Bhambatha's mother was a daughter of Chief Phakade of the Cunu (Mchunu) chieftaincy, linking the Zondi to that clan by marriage.
