Zulu Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
The Zulu clan name is primarily associated with the Zulu kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal, founded by the Zulu royal lineage from which King Shaka emerged in the early nineteenth century. As a surname it also occurs among the Swazi and appears in Swazi surname records, reflecting the close Nguni kinship between the Swazi and Zulu peoples and the considerable movement of people between the two kingdoms during the upheavals of the Mfecane era. Both peoples descend from the broader Nguni group that settled in south-eastern Africa.
Notable figures & facts
The Zulu royal house produced King Shaka, who consolidated the Zulu kingdom in the early nineteenth century. The Swazi and Zulu shared a frontier and a common Nguni heritage, with periods of both conflict and intermarriage between the kingdoms.
