Zulu Clan — History & Meaning
Ndebele clan · isiNdebele
History & origin
Zulu is the royal clan name of the amaZulu and is NOT an Ndebele clan; it is included here with that correction. The clan takes its name from an early ancestor, Zulu, in a lineage traced from Malandela (early 16th century) through his son Zulu, and descending via Chief Senzangakhona to his son Shaka, who unified numerous northern Nguni clans into the Zulu Kingdom in the early 19th century. By tradition Malandela's house split into the amaQwabe (senior, who remained) and amaZulu after a dispute, with Nozidiya taking Zulu's house toward Mthonjaneni. The surname is therefore central to Zulu, not Ndebele, history.
Notable figures & facts
King Shaka kaSenzangakhona (reigned c. 1816-1828) founded the Zulu Kingdom; the lineage continues through subsequent kings to the present Zulu royal house. Note: the unrelated 'Northern Ndebele' (Matabele) of Zimbabwe under Mzilikazi were a Khumalo-led offshoot of this Nguni world, but that is a distinct group from the Southern Ndebele and from the Zulu clan itself.
