Zwide Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
Zwide refers to Zwide kaLanga (ruled c. 1802-1820), king of the Ndwandwe nation, whose clan name was Nxumalo. Son of Langa kaXaba, Zwide built the Ndwandwe into a major military power north of the Mfolozi/Magudu region in present-day northern KwaZulu-Natal. He defeated and killed Dingiswayo of the Mthethwa around 1817-1818, becoming the principal rival of the rising Zulu under Shaka. The Ndwandwe-Zulu wars followed, including the Battle of Gqokli Hill (1818) and the decisive engagement on the Mhlatuze River (c. 1819), where Shaka broke Ndwandwe power. After his defeat Zwide fled with a remnant; his generals led breakaway groups north, producing the Gaza kingdom under Soshangane (Mozambique) and the Ngoni under Zwangendaba (toward Malawi/Zambia). Zwide's descendants carry the Nxumalo name.
