Chakijana the Cunning Weasel

Xhosa folktale · iintsomi

Kwesukasukela. Chakijana, the little mongoose-weasel, was famous throughout the land for his sharp wits and his love of mischief. Small and seemingly harmless, he could talk his way into and out of any situation. One day he hired himself out as a servant, but instead of doing honest work he tricked his master at every turn, eating the best food and blaming others. When his deceptions were discovered, he fled into the wild. There he came upon larger and more dangerous animals, but his tongue and his trickery saved him each time. He persuaded a foolish creature to take his place in danger, escaped a trap meant for him, and turned enemies against one another so they fought while he made off with the prize. Yet Chakijana was not invincible. There were moments when his greed led him into traps, and only by the most desperate clever speech did he wriggle free. He represents the small one who survives in a world of the strong not by force but by wit, and his tales were told to delight listeners and to warn them: beware the smooth-talking stranger who seems too eager to help. Cosu cosu, the tale is finished.

The lesson: The small and weak can outmatch the strong through cleverness, but unchecked greed and trickery bring their own dangers.
