Inyathi ibuzwa kwabaphambili.
Xhosa proverb · isiXhosa
Literally: “The (route taken by the) buffalo is asked from those who are ahead / who went before.”
Meaning: Seek knowledge, direction and guidance from those with greater experience; consult the elders and those who have travelled the path before you.
Background
A widely known isiXhosa proverb drawn from hunting and trekking imagery, where those at the front of the party know the movements of dangerous game like the buffalo. It is one of the most quoted Xhosa sayings on respect for elders and accumulated wisdom, and closely parallels the variant 'Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili.'
How it is used
Said to encourage humility and consultation: when facing an unfamiliar challenge, ask those who have done it before rather than blundering ahead. Often used to teach the young to honour and learn from elders.
